Or, Subtitled: “A Rich Jeffersonian History … Self-Sustaining Farmers of Multiple Children”
As my last posting states, I have not done exhaustive research on the family of Jacob Hollingsworth (1742-1822) and Mary Brooks (1745/1750 – after 15 May 1815). That posting also ends by telling you that, in subsequent postings, I’ll share the bits and pieces of information I have about the children of Jacob and Mary Brooks Hollingsworth. Since I have not researched the descendants of Jacob and Mary in any systematic way, it might be best to regard what I’m going to share about them in a series of postings as a guide to further research rather than a comprehensive account of these families and records about them.
Our family records show Jacob Sr (1742-1822) and Mary Brooks (1746-1815) Hollingsworth’s oldest child as Samuel (1767-1841) and Hannah being two years younger….

Thank you for letting me know. Do your family records have a source for Samuel’s birthdate? I’ve only seen estimates that he was born abt. 1768-1770, based on the date of his marriage.

Find a grave shows Samuel born in 1767, Hannah in 1769. Very surprisingly Sadie Greening Sparks lists Samuel as born in 1767 in Chester PA, Sarah in 1769 in Chester PA, then Hannah in 1771 in Guilford County NC. Both sources have Jacob born in 1775 and Thomas born in 1777. Find a grave also lists Benjamin born in 1779 and Henry born in 1795.
I have found the Hollingsworth family very difficult to keep straight with the amount of names being reused! I was researching women in my mother’s family and couldn’t find much on Elizabeth Lindsey Hollingsworth so l started researching Samuel Hollingsworth, and have greatly enjoyed what you have found and reported. Thank you!

Thank you for this additional information. I appreciate your telling me about the possibility that Samuel was older than Hannah. That could surely be the case, though it’s hard to pinpoint a birth year for Samuel with almost nothing to pin the year on other than the fact that he married in 1788. Alpheus Harlan in History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family and Joseph A. Stewart in Descendants of Valentine Hollingsworth both seem to have thought he was born in 1770, and I am guessing they based that date of birth on his marriage date. The one child of Samuel that I know for sure lived to 1880, his son John, reported on the 1880 federal census that his father was born in North Carolina. I definitely doubt the Pennsylvania birthplace for Samuel. You’re right that researching folks in a family with such recurring given names is a challenge! It’s clear to me that Samuel and Hannah were the first two children of Jacob Hollingsworth and Mary Brooks, and were named for his parents, but the order of their birth isn’t really clear to me, though I definitely agree that it’s possible Samuel was first and Hannah second. I, too, have wondered about the two Lindsey women that sons of Jacob Hollingsworth and Sarah Martin married. I haven’t found much information on them. The 1850 and 1860 census indicate Elizabeth was born in South Carolina, so it seems that would be the place to search for their roots — and I assume Elizabeth and Euphemia Caroline were sisters.
