Thomas Lewis Leonard, son of Thomas Leonard and Hannah Elizabeth James, was born in 1781 in Washington County, Maryland. This date of birth is based on the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses. Both censuses enumerate him in Cherokee County, Texas.[1] In 1850, the census states that Thomas was 69 years old and in 1860, he’s listed as 79. Both censuses give his birthplace as Maryland.
