Or, Subtitled: “Methodist; farmer, ginner, plantation owner in Louisiana and Texas”

7. Frances C. Birdwell, the seventh child of James G. Birdwell and Aletha Leonard, was born about 1836-1837 in Jackson County, Alabama. This date of birth is suggested by the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses. As a previous posting notes, the 1850 federal census shows her in the household of her sister Hannah and Hannah’s husband Hardin Harville in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, aged 13 and born in Alabama.[1] As another previous posting notes, after James Birdwell died in DeSoto Parish in December 1849, Hardin Harville petitioned on 2 April 1850 for administration of James’ succession, stating in his petition that Frances and her sister Sophronia were minor daughters of James Birdwell.[2] At a family meeting on 8 June 1850, Hardin Harville was made tutor of Frances and Sophronia, and the 1850 census shows Sophronia also living in the household of her sister Hannah and brother-in-law Hardin Harville in DeSoto Parish.
