Or, Subtitled: Post-Revolutionary Migration from Western North Carolina to Tennessee and Kentucky

As the previous posting indicates, the 24 March 1811 will of Charles Whitlock in Stokes County, North Carolina, names his wife Esther, who was still living when Charles wrote the will, and the following children: John, James, William, Thomas, Alexander, Agnes (Dodson), and Mary (Pruitt).[1] The will states that James had predeceased his father. I’m listing the children in the order in which their names appear in the will. A number of pieces of evidence suggest that Charles did not name his children by order of birth in his will, and that Agnes was his and Esther’s oldest child, probably followed by Alexander.

I ended my previous posting about Nancy Whitlock (1778-1863) and her husband Abner Bryson (1770-1836) by telling you that the next posting would provide information about this couple’s children and about Abner’s ancestry. As I’ve begun researching the children of Abner and Nancy Whitlock Bryson, I find I’m gathering so much information that I need to break my postings about the children of this couple into several pieces. In this posting, I’m going to focus on Abner and Nancy’s first two children, Thomas Whitlock Bryson and Catharine Bryson Williams.

With this posting, I’m resuming my chronicle of the children of James Brooks (1772-1835) and Nancy Isbell of Wayne County, Kentucky, Warren County, Tennessee, and Lawrence County, Alabama. In previous postings, I’ve chronicled the lives of their first two children, Godfrey Isbell and Thomas R. Brooks, then of their children Hannah Isbell, Margaret C., and James Irwin Brooks, and most recently of their son Johnson H. Brooks (and here). This now brings us to James and Nancy’s seventh child, their daughter Clarissa E. Brooks.
